To the One Who Keeps Hoping They Will Change
Dear Friend,
Perhaps there is someone you have been trying to understand for a very long time.
You know they can be kind.
You have seen their gentleness.
You have shared beautiful moments together.
You have laughed.
Dreamed.
Imagined a future that felt real.
That is what makes this so difficult.
If the relationship had only been painful, perhaps your heart would have found it easier to leave.
But it wasn't only painful.
There were moments that felt like home.
Moments that reminded you why you stayed.
Moments that whispered,
"Maybe things really are getting better."
So you waited.
Not because you enjoyed waiting.
But because hope can be a very convincing companion.
It has a quiet way of asking us to stay just a little longer.
One more conversation.
One more chance.
One more apology.
One more promise.
One more tomorrow.
Perhaps you believed that if you loved a little more gently...
If you became a little more patient...
If you understood them a little better...
Something would finally change.
Maybe it would.
Maybe they would become the person you always believed they could be.
And perhaps that hope kept your heart open long after it had become tired.
If this feels familiar, I hope you know something.
Staying did not mean you were foolish.
It often meant you were loving.
It meant you remembered the good alongside the difficult.
It meant your heart found it hard to let go of someone who was sometimes capable of giving you exactly what you had always hoped for.
There is no shame in that.
But I wonder if there comes a moment when hope quietly changes its shape.
When it no longer helps us move forward.
When it slowly begins asking us to ignore what we already know.
Not because reality has changed.
But because we are afraid of what accepting reality might ask of us.
Sometimes we tell ourselves we are waiting for them.
When perhaps we are waiting for the relationship we once had.
Or the relationship we believed was just around the corner.
Those are not always the same thing.
It is a painful thing to realise.
Because letting go is rarely only about saying goodbye to a person.
Sometimes we are also saying goodbye to birthdays we imagined celebrating together.
Conversations we believed we would one day have.
Trips that never happened.
A home we quietly built in our imagination.
A future that existed more in hope than in reality.
That future deserves to be grieved too.
Perhaps that is why leaving can feel so impossibly heavy.
Not because your heart cannot see the pain.
But because it is still trying to protect something beautiful it once believed in.
Please do not rush yourself through that grief.
There is no prize for letting go quickly.
The heart moves at its own pace.
But while you are waiting, I hope you gently ask yourself one question.
Am I loving the person standing in front of me today...
Or am I holding on to the person I keep hoping they will become?
Sometimes the answer arrives quietly.
Without drama.
Without certainty.
Without anyone telling us what we should do.
It simply settles into the places that have grown tired of carrying uncertainty.
And when that moment comes, I hope you remember this.
Walking away from pain does not erase the love you once felt.
It does not mean the beautiful moments were false.
It does not mean you failed.
Sometimes it simply means you have realised that love cannot grow where only one heart is carrying the responsibility for keeping it alive.
You are allowed to honour what was beautiful.
You are allowed to grieve what could not become what you hoped.
And you are allowed to choose a life where peace is no longer something you have to postpone.
Because perhaps love was never asking you to abandon yourself in order to prove that you cared.
Perhaps love was quietly hoping that, somewhere along the way, you would remember to care for yourself too.
With warmth,
Still Paath
